Hardiness level Green
A fascinating deciduous small tree - maybe more of a big shrub - from the Eastern bits of North America. Hardy and growing to 8 metres or so over about 20 years, they are excellent specimens for a focal point or conversation piece. Eyewateringly-pink flowers turn the entire thing neon in late spring with gorgeous pea-like blooms that emerge directly from the branches, and sometimes even from the trunk. Some years the leaves will emerge alongside the blooms and some years they pop out afterwards. Not sure why: just an observation from the pair in Kennington Park, South London, which are planted to flank a small wrought iron gate in a walled garden and are the star attraction. After blooming, dainty heart-shaped foliage clothes the branches: bronze when fresh and then expanding into an emerald cloud. They go butter-yellow in autumn. If ever there was a tree designed by Disney, then this is it. Plant in sun to dappled shade in any moist but well-drained soil. Doesn’t like cold Northerly winds so be mindful of that, please. These are propagated by seed which is quite special as in the UK they are a bit bashful about setting them.
