Acorus gramineus ‘Variegata’ (Japanese Rush)

£25.50 incl. VAT

Conventional wisdom suggests that this is only partly evergreen and likes growing on the margins of ponds and rivers. We find that neither are true : it’s amazingly evergreen and doesn’t need to be grown in damp places – in fact, it’ll grow almost anywhere and remain looking as fresh as a daisy (even fresher) all through the year.

We’re hesitant to say ‘bomb-proof’ too loudly but this fuzzy little evergreen plant is a seriously tough cookie. Quite delicate in appearance, the grass-like blades of these mound-forming plants are deceptively tough and strong. ‘Variegata’ comes with the added flourish of a snazzy white flash down each leaf that makes them sparkle. This quality lends them well to livening-up a shady spot under something dense. Great for the front of borders and to add texture and some softness to a mixed planting scheme, they also make superb ground-cover and are essential in a Japanese-themed setting. They’re happy in either sheltered or exposed sites, and thrive in coastal areas and just don’t care what soil you plonk them in. We do suggest planting a decent quantity if you want more of a meadow-y effect, as to be really honest they just aren’t very fast at spreading.

Well, nothing’s completely perfect is it, but this Acorus comes astonishingly close.
