Introduced to Versailles by the Comte de Galissoniere in the 18th century, it is native to the southern United States. Though it can reach 20m there, 10m is more the norm for in the UK. The leaves have rust coloured undersides and the huge white flowers are lemon-scented.
Hardy, best grown in sun but protected from cold winds. They like a moist soil with high organic content.
