Explore Esmie's collection of silk-screen printed papers carefully selected from an extensive archive of designs in Kyoto, Japan, where we work with family-run studios to produce these exquisite designs in our colour specifications. Many of the designs (also known as Yuzen or Chiyogami) are inspired by textiles dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868), and incorporate symbols of Japanese culture and sensibility, including cranes for long life, blossom for beauty & longevity, bamboo for flexibility. Each colour is applied individually by hand, of which there can be up to 7, all registered with incredible precision, creating an extraordinary depth of colour & pattern, finished with metallic ink creating a beautiful gold lustre. The 88 g/m² base paper is a mixture of kozo and sulphite, despite being light weight, these papers are extremely durable making them suitable for many applications including, bookbinding, origami, box-making, as well as interior projects such as wall covering and furniture lining.
