Hardiness level Red
A tender, very exotic perennial with flamboyantly-big foliage and dazzling flowers. Definitely for the summer garden: the warmer seasons bring out the best in all lushly-vigorous plants like Cannas. This one can reach to around 2m in height, its broad spear-tipped leaves will tint bronze in bright sun and though small, the red or dark orange flowers are a vibrant flash of exoticism that are an arresting talking point. As if those leaves weren’t enough. Not a shy plant, or one for the faint-hearted gardener.
For best results, plant cannas in a warm, sunny position and give them rich, moist soil. Can be left outside in mild areas but even there, it’s a good idea to mulch in winter after removing the collapsed leaves. I leave mine slumbering in their sheltered South-London corner but elsewhere it might be best to dig them up in the autumn and store the roots in frost-free conditions over winter. Excellent grown in a pot, but be careful not to over water them in the winter and early spring. Keep the soil almost completely dry: it’s sufficient. It can be as late as May before they break into growth again, and then keep well fed and watered for the summer. As the roots bulk up, they can be divided and re-potted.
