Beschorneria yuccoides ‘Flamingo Glow’ (Flamingo Glow)

Imagine your garden in high summer with Beschorneria yuccoides ‘Flamingo Glow’, imagine the bright green strap shaped leaves arching from a central rosette, and the whole clump growing anything from 50cm to 100cm both in height and width. Then imagine that the leaves have a broad bright-white stripe along the mid-rib before completing the picture with an amazing flower spike. Growing up to 1.5m in height, the flamingo-pink stem will carry green flowers that are themselves framed by purply-pink bracts.

This is a beautiful, selected, garden form of the species plant Beschorneria yuccoides which originated in the Mexican mountains, flourishing on the steep sides of ravines and canyons at altitudes of 2,000 or 3,000m. So it is less the cold aspect and more the damp of a British winter that could be the cause of damage to the plant. In mild gardens it will grow happily in free draining loamy, sandy or chalky soils and is best positioned in a sunny spot. In cooler gardens, it may need some winter protection or even grow it in a pot and move it under shelter for protection against our often cold and soggy winters.
