A beautiful, hardy and deciduous tree up to 30m tall in the eastern USA, but 12m over 50 years in Northern Europe. The unusual blunt ended lobed leaves emerge green in the spring but turn a wonderful buttery yellow in the autumn. In May and June the tulip shaped flowers are greeny yellow with basal splodges in red and orange ripening to winged seeds in a cone shaped brown fruit.
It is shallow rooted, growing best in full sun, in any deep, moist fertile soil. It is known as fiddlewood and canoe tree as well as yellow poplar, reflecting the many uses of the yellow to dark brown timber. produced by seed/cuttings.
