Billowing and immensely tactile, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans’ will reward you all year round, but note this is not a plant for exposed sites. Keep away from cold, drying winds.
A teasing conical shape bearing foliage, held in tiers that could achieve 6m in height over 20 years. Bizarrely, this tree retains its juvenile foliage throughout its life. So the spiky, short leaves that are set spirally around the branches remain soft, changing from a vivid green as new shoots, to a softer mature colour in the summer and then amazingly a mix of bronzy reds and purples over the winter as the cold takes effect, before reverting to green as the year turns to spring again. It is happy growing in light shade but will give better winter colours if planted in a sunny position.
This conifer, originally from Japan, has red bark becoming spongy and soft with age. Small, round, knobbly cones add even more textural satisfaction. Plant it on humus rich moist-but-well-drained soil and it will give colour and texture to your garden throughout the seasons.
