Pinus strobus ‘Krugers Lilliput’ is the perfect name for this beautiful, tiny little tree that would be fantastic in a place where its diminutive stature could be appreciated, maybe in a rock garden, a raised bed, or if well cared for, in a pot.
The needles are short and stiff, blue green with silvery undersides and are held in dense clusters. The growth is slow but steady, forming a dense rounded or domed shape that could eventually achieve a magnificent 60cm over a decade. It is evergreen, hardy and easy, growing best in free draining soil and in full sun.
Pinus strobus ‘Kruger’s Lilliput’ is about as unlike the parent species Eastern White Pine trees as you can get. These were originally widespread in the eastern United States, but now both these and the many selected forms of Pinus strobus are known by the common name of ‘Weymouth Pine’, which turns out to refer to a Lord Weymouth who planted one of the first Eastern White pines at Longleat in 1705 (nothing to do with the seaside town).
