The common name of ‘Flaky Juniper’ refers not to the plant’s personality but rather to its habit of shedding strips of reddish brown bark.  This is a cracking conifer.  The needles are a steel grey, the plant is low and spreading and is often seen in rockeries and Japanese gardens.  It is slow growing, but given lots and lots of time, it could develop into a tree 6m x 3m, though that would be a gift for your grandchildren.

It has never been found in the wild, rather it is a clone that was propagated by cuttings in the gardens of central China where a certain Mr Meyer found it and introduced it to the USA in 1910, before it was brought to our gardens.
