Evergreen without being strictly green: this cultivar has purply stems and an inky, petrol-blue sheen to the spiky leaves that makes them rather unusual. Think of a rook’s wing. Being a female, as long as there is a male somewhere around, she will produce crimson berries in the autumn. The tree, if grown naturally, could reach 3m but this multi-stem is a beautifully clipped piece of topiary. It does equally well in sun or light shade and in any moist but well-drained soil.
