Echeveria glauca (The Blue Hens and Chicks)
£18.50 incl. VAT
Echeveria glauca is a beautiful succulent from Mexico. Easy for pots and will survive outside in mild gardens.
Hardiness level Red
The leaves are like pointy overlapping petals that form rosettes up to 10cm across. Then in the summer, they develop delicate stems up to 30cm tall which carry pink and yellow bell shaped flowers. These rosettes do not die after flowering but carry on growing happily for many years.
Echeveria glauca are good subjects for pots or raised beds, planted in free draining gritty soil. They thrive in sun and will survive outside in the ground in mild coastal or city gardens being considerably more frost hardy than the similar African Aeoniums. However they may benefit from protection both from the most intense blazing summer sunshine and from a combination of cold and wet during the winter.
Please contact us for stock availability and sizes. Remarkably easy little plants with long lasting flowers and little inclination to be troubled with pests or diseases. They spread, so a wide shallow pot works well and a reasonable amount of light.
The only thing to occasionally blight these is Vine Weevil larvae that love nibbling the roots. This will only be a problem if they're in a pot. Vine Weevils are endemic to the British Isles and remember that the troublesome larvae are only a stage. Sooner or later they'll metamorphose into an adult which will not be interested in the Echeveria. Biological Controls bugs (nematodes) are available for control of the Vine Weevil larvae.
