Magnolia soulangeana
From £595.00 incl. VAT
Magnolia soulangeana is loved here at Architectural Plants for its unpredictable charm. It doesn’t happen every spring, but some years everything comes together, and the flowers of the Magnolia soulangeana open in glorious profusion in mild spring sunshine with no frosts, no wind, just huge, waxy, tulip- and cup-shaped blooms in pinks and whites and purples.
This is a hybrid between two trees of Chinese origin: Magnolia denudata, a tree to 9m with white goblet shaped flowers that open wide, and Magnolia liliiflora which is much smaller at 3m with pink and purple tulip shaped blooms. It was bred by M.Etienne Soulange-Bodin, a retired officer from Napoleon’s army and presented to the public in 1826 since then it has become a firm favourite.
Magnolia x soulangeana is an almost perfect combination of both parents. It is slow growing and spreading, reaching roughly 6m in height and spread; with the flowers appearing on the naked branches just as the leaves begin to emerge. The flowers are tulip shaped opening to 20 or 30cm across, they are white and shaded with pinks and purples. The 20cm long, oval leaves are a soft mid green and the whole tree is easy to cultivate, reasonably wind resistant and of a size to suit most gardens.
They flourish on well drained sand or loam with lots of organic matter. They have a shallow and widespread, but fleshy, root system so tend to struggle in poor, dry or chalky soils, but respond well to a thick layer of mulch in the spring which both retains moisture and supplies nutrients.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Photos represent the plants at their different stages. Your plant may arrive with new/loose roots, having been recently pruned or cut to enhance it's growth.
