Aloe striatula (Coral Aloe)

A remarkable discovery: a tough and exotic-looking character with an upright and branching habit to around 3 x 3 feet. That’s quite unusual for an aloe, which tend towards ground-hugging tenderness and might be accused of not doing very much. These ones do plenty, with glorious yellow torch-like flowers produced all summer on vigorous toothsome branches. This one is remarkably hardy and we can tell you that there are not many of the South African Aloes that can be grown in Britain. In truth, some of it does sprawl on the ground but some of it also occasionally rears up to 3ft - or more if supported by a wall. Very cold weather will kill off the tips but it soon recovers. I've had it growing in my West Sussex frost pocket of a garden for many years and it’s quite the talking point. Some succulent, primaeval weirdness is essential in any garden for this very reason, and we heartily endorse these for any space especially for a sun trap or cosy wall. We propagate this on our own nursery, by cuttings, so you know you’re getting quality gear.
