Lovely little variegated version of our well known Orange Bark Myrtle. Littlke? Variegated plants are invariably smaller and slower growing than 'the type' (the original). Masses of small fragrant white flowers in mid-summer. Could reach 3.5m after 25 years. Produced by 'cuttings'.
N.B. When clipping several plants with the same tool, have a bucket containing a 5% bleach solution and swish your blades around for 30 seconds between plants to sterilise them. This will help avoid the chance of cross contamination of disease.
As with all woody plants, plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Allowing soil to accumulate round the base of a tree can be fatal. Keep very well watered when first planted.

How do you take care of Myrtus apiculata?
They like water. Given ideal conditions (plenty of water), they could grow to 15ft in 10 to 15 years. They have the most amazing root systems that seek out water with incredible enthusiasm and grow vigorously. Will tolerate very low temperatures but struggle with cold northerlies when their roots are frozen. So, avoid planting this tree if very exposed to cold winds. Although not suitable for seaside planting, it will tolerate a bit of marine exposure. Plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Keep very well-watered when first planted. A favourite for training as a cloud pruned ‘Niwaki’. It’s better in a protected, urban, courtyard sort of garden to be admired from close quarters. As with all topiary, the more often you clip the plant, the thicker the foliage and the higher the definition. With Myrtus apiculata this also means a higher density of lovely white flowers on each cloud pad.
