‘Extravagant’ to the point of implausible: must be seen to be believed. The most lavish variety of clambering plants not exactly known for being withdrawn, ‘Longissima Alba’ is a breathtaking, vigorous twining vine originating in Japan. We all know Wisterias: wildly beautiful with a charming lack of natural discipline. These ones have been tamed, somewhat, into beautiful standard forms. It will romp away as lustily as any trellis-wrecking climber with those twisty-twining and spreading branches, but these ones stand up like trees. Full of character in any season, but absolutely smothered in clouds of ferny limey-green foliage from March to October and then the flowers. Oh…the flowers. Don’t let the awkward portmanteau of ‘longissima’ bother you. In Italian, the Absolute Superlative ‘-issima’ amplifies: so…it's long-issima is really, really long. I say. Immense dangles of blooms up to 2 feet long will absolutely plaster the plant in early spring and they’re gorgeous-issima. Pure white with the nearest hint of lilac, and so sweetly scented your garden will flood. A must for year-round form and architecture but they do appreciate a sheltered location. Ideal for courtyards and city gardens.
