Pinus parviflora ‘Ogon janome’ Niwaki at Architectural Plants is a charming pine. It will grow in full sun, but it looks best if sited away from the full blast of the sun at midday. Like all pines it is drought tolerant, but if your Niwaki is growing in a beautiful shallow container, then attend to the husbandry and water more frequently as required.
In the wild, this would only attain a couple of metres in height over a decade or so. This slow rate of growth means that this very special plant lends itself beautifully to the art of Niwaki. Pinus parviflora ‘Ogon Janome’ Niwaki has blue-green needles, but it is in that the most amazing thing happens as each new needle emerges banded with bright yellow. The result when looked at straight on, is quite startling creating the effect of a ‘dragon’s eye’. This yellow colouration remains until the autumn but fades over the winter until the ‘eyes’ reappear the following spring.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Photos represent the plants at their different stages. Your plant may arrive with new/loose roots, having been recently pruned or cut to enhance it's growth.
