Known as the Chinese White Pine from western and central China where this tree was regarded as a symbol of longevity. This beautiful tree was discovered by Pere Armand David in the Chinese province of Shensi in 1873 and trees cultivated from the seeds he sent back. Not widely grown in this country it does well, particularly in the southern half of the UK. The adult shape is roughly conical but with an open habit, the needles are long to 20cms. pendulous and a soft greeny-blue. The cones too are long and slender also growing up to 20cms in length and developing in clusters of 2 or 3, green when young maturing to brown and remaining on the tree for months.
After 150 years growing in the UK there are now specimens 20m tall, so the rate of growth is fairly slow! It is hardy, can be planted in exposed or sheltered spots and once established is pretty drought tolerant.
Plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Allowing soil to accumulate around the base of a tree can be fatal. Keep well watered when first planted.
