Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Fastigiatum’ (Tulip Tree)

£1,495.00 incl. VAT

For those of us not possessed of rolling acres, but still looking for a tree to make a statement then this Liriodendron really fits the bill giving drama and height but not width. Great for the smaller garden. They are magnificent deciduous trees with beautiful clear green leaves that look like someone has taken a pair of scissors to them with characteristically blunt ends as if the pointy bits have been chopped off, and because they are held on long stalks they flutter delightfully in light breezes.

Like Magnolias, Liriodendrons are trees that evolved in ancient times. It is not a Magnolia but is a genus within the Magnolia family and shares some of the characteristics. This is a tree that is native to Ontario and the eastern and central states of the USA. In the Appalachian Mountains it can grow up to 1500m above sea level and can reach 55m in height with a bole that is slender and straight supporting a tall slim head of foliage. The trunks in the UK tend to be shorter with the tree reaching 20m. They do particularly well in the milder Atlantic regions.

The flowers are small, cup-shaped and are greeny white in colour with orangey splodges at the base. Be patient as it can take a couple of decades for them to start flowering. The flowers can be followed by seed heads that resemble splayed brown pine cones and the leaves take on a deep buttery yellow in the autumn.

Site the trees out of strong and persistent winds in full sun to partial shade but most importantly plant them on deep moist soils avoiding dry and chalky positions.

Liriodendrons are also used as a source of timber, the wood being coloured yellow to dark brown and is known as 'Yellow Poplar wood', probably because it is reminiscent of the heartwood of the yellow Poplar tree which can be a pale yellowish-brown.
