Cyrtomium fortunei is a lovely forest dwelling fern that came originally from temperate Asia, so grows well in mild gardens in the UK, enhancing shady borders, woodlands, rock gardens or grown in pots for shady courtyards or patios.

Cyrtomium fortunei can reach 60cm in height with upright, slightly arching fronds of matt green foliage. It is pinnate with up to 20 pairs of sharply pointed teardrop shaped leaves on each frond. Grow it in dappled or fully shaded, sheltered spots in humus rich, moist-but-well-drained soil.

Although it is hardy, in colder gardens, some winter protection may be advisable against both the cold and to avoid winter root rot. Water after planting, but once established, it is fairly drought resistant.
