Osmanthus x fortunei
This hybrid between Osmanthus heterophyllus and Osmanthus fragrans grows into a loely round headed evergreen shrub or small tree that over 20 years could get to 4m tall and 2.5m across. The leaves are leathery with spiny edges. Sweetly fragrant white flowers appear in the autumn.
Happy in sun to partial shade in moist but well drained soil in a spot out of the cold northerly winds. It can be successfully clipped but as it flowers on the previous year’s wood, heavy pruning may prevent flowering the following year.
