It might not be instantly obvious when you visit Architectural Plants, but sustainability sits at the very heart of how we operate. It is not a recent initiative or a box we have decided to tick. It has been part of the nursery from the very beginning. You could say it is in our xylem.

Why Water Matters So Much

Water is critical to everything we do. We use it for general irrigation, to feed plants through our system, and to apply nematodes and other preventative plant health treatments. Keeping plants healthy at scale requires consistency, reliability, and a lot of planning.

Every drop counts and we’re very proud that we’re able to care for thousands of plants while keeping our environmental footprint low. The lake system isn’t just practical, it’s beautiful, teeming with wildlife, and a reminder that great design can work in harmony with nature.

Our Specialist Nursery

Designed With Water in Mind

When the site was first set up, Angus made a deliberate and slightly unconventional decision. Rather than placing the main entrance driveway on high ground, the central road was designed to be the lowest point of the nursery. The land to both the north and south rises gradually, reaching exactly one metre higher at the far edges of the site.

This simple but considered piece of engineering allows water runoff from both sides of the nursery to drain naturally towards the centre. From there, it feeds into underground drainage pipes that ultimately lead back to the lake. It is a system designed to work with gravity rather than against it, and it plays a vital role in how we manage water across the nursery.

Many of the trees and shrubs we grow on-site don’t just head out to customers’ gardens — they also feature in the stunning gardens right here at the nursery. Our Head Gardener, Colin, has poured countless hours into developing our Wilderness Garden, a living showcase of what our plants can become once they’ve settled into a mature landscape. Visitors can wander through and see the very same species we grow and sell, thriving in a natural setting and surrounded by wildlife. It’s not just a beautiful space for customers, but also a vital learning ground for our apprentices, who work alongside Colin to plant, maintain, and nurture the gardens. Through this hands-on experience, they gain invaluable practical skills and a deeper understanding of the plants that make Architectural Plants so special.

For us, operating this way makes sense both economically and socially. Sustainable systems are not just better for the environment, they also create resilience, efficiency, and long-term stability for the business.

Water is only part of the picture. In 2025, we added solar panels to power our irrigation system, another important step in reducing our environmental impact.

The panels now generate around 80 percent of the energy we consume on site. During the summer months, when irrigation demand is high and daylight hours are long, we even generate enough surplus energy to sell back to the grid.

Sustainability at Architectural Plants is not about grand statements. It is about thoughtful design, ongoing investment, and making decisions that will still stand up years down the line.
