Phormium tenax ‘Black Velvet’ is a shapely evergreen hardy perennial, this Phormium has dark purple, leathery, arching foliage that’s greyish underneath the leaves. The clump grows to about 90 – 100cm in height and 60cm across over about 5 years. In the summer it can throw tall stems carrying panicles of red tubular flowers.

Maintenance is straightforward, consisting of removing old flower stems and any dead or damaged leaves.
Plant in full sun in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in a southerly or easterly facing position. A good plant for borders, raised beds, pots and in coastal positions.
In frost prone areas, provide a deep, dry mulch in the winter.
Propagation is by division in spring.
