Photinia glabra – Pleached (Kaname-Mochi)
From 495.00 incl. VAT
A clever idea from Italy – a bush grafted onto a trunk producing a tidy little evergreen tree with new growth that’s red and frothy with white flowers in May.
Hardiness level Green
Photinia glabra is a reliable evergreen plant with plain and simple leaves - except - that the new growth is bright red before it matures to green, and as the old leaves are shed, (yes, even evergreens will shed old leaves, it's just that it's a few at a time rather than all at once in the autumn,) then these turn a satisfying scarlet, too. Don't forget either, the panicles of white flowers that develop in summer. It responds well to clipping and is generally an amenable plant, so we offer it in a number of shapes and sizes.
Pleached Photinia glabra. When architecture is thrust upon them in this way they are a highly attractive screening option or an instant two-dimensional hedge-on-legs. A bamboo or metal frame is attached to the top of the trunk within which the stems are grown and trained. Brilliant where space is limited. They provide both vibrant leaf colour and a flourish of exuberant flowers from March to late April / May. Pleached photinia glabra will need clipping regularly, which not only encourages dense growth but also means that there is lots of new, beautifully red foliage.
Sun or semi-shade in fertile well-drained soil. Protect from strong, cold winds. This little tree has the remarkable ability to produce its new growth in what appears to be the middle of winter (February/early March). With any other plant this new growth would be blackened immediately by the next frost - in the case of Photinia glabra, it remains totally unaffected by frost.
N.B. When clipping several plants with the same tool, have a bucket containing a 5% bleach solution and swish your blades around for 30 seconds between plants to sterilise them. This will help avoid the chance of cross contamination of disease.
As with all woody plants, plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Allowing soil to accumulate round the base of a tree can be fatal. Keep very well watered when first planted.
