Drimys lanceolata
£34.00 incl. VAT
Hardy and evergreen shrub from Southern Australia and Tasmania* with coral-red stems and rich dark green glossy leaves. These are properly leaf-shaped: pointed ovals which are ever so slightly chubby and succulent-looking with a subtle, faint fold down the middle. Has pretty white flowers in spring and these are fun: gender is a social construct but once your Drimys blooms you’ll know if it’s a ‘boy’ or a ‘girl’: male flowers have 5-8 petals, and the female flowers usually have far fewer, around four. Regardless, they’re all pretty. A rarely-seen plant in UK gardens which is a shame as they are really beautiful and suit our maritime nooks. Considered hardy, do choose a sheltered and sunny spot and protect from Northerly winds as the leaves can get a bit blasted and it will look tatty. Suits any soil that’s nutritious and free-draining: an eye catching and unusual asset for any garden.
