Cephalotaxus harringtonia ‘Fastigiata’ (Chosen-maki or Plum Yew)
Having a remarkable resemblance to an Irish Yew, this is a columnar tree with upright branches and decurved, 4cm long leaves arranged spirally around the twigs. Very slow growing, this could take half a century to reach 4m in height and 2.5m across. Female trees, (if there’s a male in the area), can sometimes carry little green fruits that are said to resemble tiny plums.
Hardiness level Green
Position: Native to light woodland in Korea and Japan. Plant in sun to dappled shade in any moist but well drained soil, sheltered from strong winds. New spring growth on east facing plants may be susceptible to frost damage. Propagation by seed or cuttings.
