The most uprighty of upright and architectural trees, with a properly tight oval-ish form that remains narrow and plume-like into maturity. Good news for those wanting an impressive specimen tree that won’t cast acres of shade or take up much lateral space. Deciduous and extremely hardy, Hornbeams (for that’s what a Carpinus is) are an excellent choice for urban gardens or new builds with terrible soil. Bombproof once established. Their resilience doesn't make them any less refined though and ‘Frans Fontaine’ is a lovely tree with deeply corrugated fresh green leaves that ombre into glorious gold and orange in the autumn. Typically the leaves remain on the delicate upswept branches right through the winter, too, especially in sheltered spots. They go all crackly and crinkly and gingerbread-coloured, the whole effect from a distance is rather like one of those crystalised drumsticks of brown-sugar that come with your coffee in posh cafes. An avenue of these trees would look tremendous as each specimen can be relied upon to grow uniformly for a wonderful, effortless repetition. Also essential where an impactful upright whoosh is required as a focal point, or to emphasise the corners of a formal design. If you planted a few in a line you’d get a hedge.

FAQs

How fast does Carpinus betulus grow?

The foliage is taller than the trunk so the overall height of these is some 15ft overall but less than 2ft thick. It rather depends on the size of your stepladder and your head for heights.

How do you take care of Carpinus betulus?

For maximum impressiveness, the ideal is to clip them to the proportion of the ones in the picture attached of a garden in Wiltshire. When clipping several plants with the same tool, have a bucket containing a 5% bleach solution and swish your blades around for 30 seconds between plants to sterilise them. This will help avoid the chance of cross contamination of disease. As with all woody plants, plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Allowing soil to accumulate round the base of a tree can be fatal. Keep very well-watered when first planted.

How tall does Carpinus betulus grow?

They can grow large over 30ft. Pleached carpinus are trained onto a frame to be planted at intervals of approximately 5-6ft to create a pleached hedge.

Do Carpinus betulus prefer sun or shade?

Full Sun (Space and Light), Semi-Shade (Dappled)

Is Carpinus betulus an indoor or outdoor plant?

Outdoor, large tree over 30ft.
