Marion Brandis: ‘Brighton Buoy’
£6,795.00 incl. VAT
‘Brighton Buoy’ is a companion piece to the Kemptown Spheres that Marion created for the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Drawing inspiration from the city’s distinctive seafront architecture and shoreline, the sculpture explores the relationship between human design and the natural coastal environment.

The structured imagery of houses and arches reflects Brighton’s built landscape, with its ordered forms and repeating rhythms. These carefully defined elements are set in deliberate contrast to a random assemblage of pebbles and beach flotsam, gathered and shaped by the sea. Together, these materials echo the constant dialogue between permanence and change that defines the coastline.
By bringing together architectural motifs and organic found objects, Brighton Buoy captures the meeting point between human construction and the natural world. The sculpture suggests resilience, adaptation, and balance, acknowledging how the city and the sea continually influence one another. As with the Kemptown Spheres, the work invites close inspection, rewarding viewers with layers of detail that reflect both the fragility and strength of a place shaped by time, tide, and human presence.
