Rhodochiton atrosanguineus (The Purple Bell Vine)
£25.50 incl. VAT
Striking flowers stud this climber from late spring through to the autumn. A skirt of five shocking-pink calyces surround the top of a pendulous tube, flared at the base in such a deep, velvety purple. And even after the tubular flowers have fallen, the profusion of the bell-shaped pink skirts remain.
Hardiness level Red
Rhodochiton originates in the woodlands of southern Mexico and Guatemala where it is perennial. So plant in a sunny spot, but maybe with protection from the worst of the afternoon sun. The twining stalks of the heart-shaped leaves mean that it is self-supporting. Plant it in a fertile but well-drained soil, feed copiously and this hungry plant can reach 3m in just one season.
In very mild areas in the UK, it should survive the winter, it will die down but with a good mulch, it should come back in the spring. Otherwise grow it in a large pot so it can be overwintered indoors, or simply treat it as a tender annual.
