Tall and slender, it can grow to 2.5m x 1.5m over a decade. Plant it in full sun, in an exposed or a sheltered position on well-drained soil that is on the acid side of neutral and it will grow quietly and happily in your garden whether you wish to enjoy its natural shape or the sculptural form of a Niwaki.
Pinus parviflora 'San Bo' is a cultivar of the Japanese White Pine. It has an elegant curved trunk and grey-green needles that are clustered quite densely on the tree and develop a strong blue colouration that is further enhanced by planting it in a sunny position and becomes particularly intense during the winter months. Described as ‘yatsubusa’, this refers both to the small stature and the density of the needles and in Japan the tree is often used as a subject for Bonsai or Niwaki training.
