Pinus parviflora ‘Fukai Seedling’
£127.50 incl. VAT
Like all pines, it needs an open sunny spot on well drained soil that is on the acid side of neutral. Pruning is minimal and generally limited to removal of any dead, damaged or diseased growth, but should always be done in the winter to avoid unsightly resinous streaks.
There are many cultivars of Pinus parviflora, but the Fukai Seedling pine tree is exceptional. Unusually for pines, the new spring foliage emerges a bright green with slender yellow bands to give the tree a vivid spring colour. Then over the summer the colours mature gently to a rich blue-grey.
It was discovered by Tage Lundell from Helsingborg, who is widely regarded as the greatest Swedish gardener of the 20th century. He named it Fukai which in Japanese can translate as deep, or intense, which perfectly describes this seedling of Pinus parviflora. It is a small and slow growing tree perfect for raised beds and rockeries.
A suggestion for those adventurous gardeners amongst us is to take and enhance the natural curve and slope of the trunk and branches, add a few years of judicious pruning and training, and you too could be the proud possessor of a proper Niwaki tree - and it will be all your own work. You may or may not be aware, but Architectural Plants offer courses in pruning, creative maintenance and Niwaki so please contact us if any of them sound interesting to you.
