Pittosporum tobira ‘Variegatum’
Dense, variegated, shapely, evergreen free flowering shrub from Japan with masses of creamy-white, very fragrant flowers in early summer. Please contact us for stock availability and sizes.
Hardiness level Amber
The variegated form of Pittosporum tobira is slightly less hardy and considerably less vigorous (as with all variegated plants) than the type (Horti-speak for the non-variegated form) but also tends to be both earlier to flower and more prolific in flower which is no bad thing. The ‘variegatum’ on this one is really beautiful, being rather more a poised and restrained misting than a riotous splosh in the face.
Drought tolerant thanks to those tough and leathery (yet very pretty) leaves, and very well suited to mild coastal regions and London gardens where the climate is a little kinder. Great for cushiony structure and a solid, evergreen form. A marvellous plant for sunny, sheltered gardens and you can let it mound itself into a dense rounded bubble in the border or stick it in a pot. While this one is good in a container, do keep it well clipped and remember that ‘drought tolerant’ does not mean it can be ignored: it’s depending on you to bring it whatever its roots can’t reach.
Place in sun or partial shade in any soil: the more sun you give it, the more flowers you’ll get… Like all Pittosporums it is wind-resistant. Produced by us, from cuttings.
N.B. When clipping several plants with the same tool, have a bucket containing a 5% bleach solution and swish your blades around for 30 seconds between plants to sterilise them. This will help avoid the chance of cross contamination of disease.
As with all woody plants, plant high, exposing as much of the taper at the base of the trunk as possible. Allowing soil to accumulate round the base of a tree can be fatal. Keep very well watered when first planted.
