Panicum virgatum (Switch Grass or Twiggy Panic Grass)
£16.50 incl. VAT
A tall prairie grass from North America. Tall enough to be considered properly architectural at up to 2.7 metres, this is a gutsy grass and makes a spectacular statement. Slender, arching grey-green blades geyser up in chunky swathes and towards the end of summer plumes of frothy flowers will appear. These are cloud-like and incredibly fine: a partridge-coloured haze.

Hardiness level Green
Grasses are an essential addition to any garden and Panicum Virgatum must be one of the top choices. Imposing and structural yet managing to be light and full of movement. The slightest of breezes will cause ripples and shivers. Not evergreen, but fully hardy nonetheless. Leave the stems standing through winter as there’s no need to chop them yet. Though spent, they retain their impressive silhouette and look magical when rimed with frost. A swift hack at the base in early spring isn’t as brutal as it sounds and new growth will fountain forth like magic.
