Phillyrea latifolia – Niwaki and Clouds

An incredibly hardy small tree that’s suited for almost anywhere, even the most cold and exposed spots. Deeply dark green foliage, very dinky leaves all glossy and sticky-looking and with a naturally dense nature. Combined with elegant but strong and decoratively-barked trunks, it makes Phillyrea a no-brainer choice for training into a variety of architectural forms.

Phillyrea latifolia – Standards

Hardy and really easy to grow evergreen shrub. Originating in the Mediterranean: the Victorian gardeners were mad for it and it was planted extensively by them. For some reason it fell out of vogue after 1900. We rediscovered it and have been growing it for 30 years now, and convinced as we are by its beauty and versatility we’re spear-heading a renaissance for this tremendous plant.

Phillyrea latifolia – Arches

These stonking great specimens are really smart and very desirable. We can say that because we trained them into what you see here, and we’re rather expert at the training having perfected our art over decades. Credit goes to an exemplary plant, too, however. Phillyrea has a natural tendency toward dense, tight growth on strong but malleable trunks and this makes them tremendous for shaping.

Phillyrea latifolia – Pillows

Homegrown at Architectural Plants our Phillyrea latifolia pillows are flatter and fatter than balls. They come in a big, wide pot to give instant gravitas to your planting. A beautiful native of the Mediterranean, Phillyrea latifolia is in the same family as the olive, but has small dark green leaves, small yellowish flowers and small black fruits. The sum of the parts though, is so much more. A truly lovely tree that can be allowed to grow naturally, or is so good when used for topiary. Position them in sun or shade in well drained soil, clipping lightly to maintain the shape. Simple.
